Dinner party: how much wine do you need?
It’s always difficult, isn’t it? You’re hosting a dinner and need to buy wine. You’ve finally decided which wine you want to serve, but now you still need to work out the quantity. With this (hilarious) calculation, you’ll definitely be fine.
A drinks party where the promised food isn’t there or dinner parties without enough wine: not fun. Stocking up on enough food isn’t difficult, but many people find it trickier when it comes to wine. We’re here to help.
Count in glasses, not bottles
To determine how many bottles of wine you need, you first need to calculate how many glasses there are in a bottle. It may sound silly, but for large groups it’s much easier to count in glasses than in bottles. Five glasses from a bottle is realistic. But hey, it’s a celebration. The glasses will definitely be filled fuller than they should be. So four glasses per bottle?
Does that friend like wine a lot, or an awful lot?
Now you need to think about how many glasses of wine each guest will drink in an evening. It would be a little excessive if you knew that off the top of your head for everyone, but in the chart below you can see approximately how many glasses someone drinks. You just need to estimate how much your guests love wine. Now all that’s left is to calculate: number of guests × number of expected glasses per guest ÷ 4 = the number of bottles of wine you need.
