Grim’ de Poire with tonic

The semi-sweet Grim’ de Poire is already a lovely aperitif on its own, but combined with the refreshing Fentimans Tonic Water, it becomes even more delicious. The sweetness of the Poire is toned down somewhat, and the extra fizz from the tonic creates a refreshing drink.

Grim’ de Poire is an aperitif made from one-third young pear calvados and two-thirds pear must; that is freshly pressed, unfermented pear juice. Calvados is made by distilling cider. The mixture is put into barrels, and because of the 65 percent alcohol content, the juice does not ferment. After a year of barrel ageing, the drink is fresh and fruity.
Cognac
The drink is somewhat reminiscent of cognac, but because it is mixed with pear juice, it has an alcohol content of around seventeen percent. In terms of flavour, not-too-intense cheeses, chocolate, fruity cake or nuts pair well with the Poire.
By mixing Grim’ de Poire with tonic, you create a party in your glass that will easily see you through to the end of the evening. The tonic is made with a blend of herbs, orange and lemongrass. Curious? You can order the Grim’ de Poire from the Pomme d’Or website, and you can also get a glass at Razmataz in Amsterdam. Be sure to ask for this special mix, though, as it is not normally listed on the menu.
You can make it yourself by mixing 1 part Grim’ de Poire with 2 parts Fentimans Tonic Water.
