Tequila is made from the agave plant, which grows particularly well in Mexico. The country has around a thousand tequila producers. All the drink is made between Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta, a strip known as Tequila Town.

Three types of tequila

There are three types of tequila: blanco, reposado and añejo. They are all made from the agave plant. Blanco is the purest and youngest form and is made from blue agave. The drink is bottled no more than four weeks after distillation. Reposado is a fuller tequila that is aged in wooden barrels for between two and eleven months. Añejo is aged for at least one year in barrels holding no more than 600 liters. The drink is light brown, with a richer and more complex flavor.

Agave = good

If the label says 100 percent agave, you can enjoy the tequila with peace of mind, but when the drink has been diluted with synthetic alcohol or corn syrup, that’s a no go.

Preventing a hangover?

That corn syrup found in cheap varieties causes a pounding headache the day after. And of course, you don’t want that. So choose blanco tequila if you don’t want a hangover, and have a glass of water every now and then in between drinks.
