Tess Posthumus is the best
Being the best is always fun. Being the best female bartender in the world is the most fun of all. On July 21, the Annual Spirited Awards were presented once again in New Orleans. Tess was among the top four contenders for the International Bartender of the Year Award.
That makes her the best female bartender in the world, because the top three are men. Since she heard that she was ‘in the top 4’ without any further specifications, and only the number one is announced, it could very well be that Tess is the second-best bartender in the world. She calls this ‘the crowning achievement of her work’, and of course that number one spot is still a life goal.
The secret
According to Tess, the secret to her bartending talent lies in the fact that she champions Dutch genever internationally. Around 1900, a quarter of all cocktails were based on genever, but all the wars and the ensuing grain shortages put an end to that. Tess is committed to bringing back genever and highlighting its strength. She is also busy educating both consumers and bartenders. For consumers, the message is: move away from that bargain wine. Alcohol should be consumed in moderation, but if you do drink it, make sure it is genuinely good. Tess will teach you how. Of course, she has already written a handbook for the aspiring cocktail shaker: Cocktails met Tess. It will also be published in English at the end of September, and she is working on a new book.
