Bye bye, black truffle

A few weeks ago, we received the happy news that white truffles are cheaper than ever. Unfortunately, the black variety has a less rosy future. Due to climate change, it could well be that by the end of this century, we will be without black truffles.

Do you always order a dish with truffle when it’s on the menu? We get it—the luxurious taste of truffle on pasta, risotto or pizza is impossible to beat. This week, however, we read some bad news: scientists predict that European truffle production may disappear completely as a result of climate change.
No more truffles
A study by a university in Scotland predicts that if climate change continues at this rate, truffle production in Europe will decline by as much as 78 to 100 (!!) percent between 2071 and 2100. So there’s actually a chance that in a hundred years, black truffles will no longer exist at all!
Extra vulnerable
Truffles are extremely difficult to cultivate, so they come from the wild. This means they are especially vulnerable to weather and climate change. Want your grandchildren to still be able to enjoy a generous truffle pasta? Then don’t spend hours in the shower and turn off the heating when you leave the house.
