Oh yes, this is the latest vegan trend

We’re not all going to start wearing slippers made from sweet potato peel this winter, and the avocado still hasn’t gone out of fashion. No, it’s much, much worse. Are you sitting down? Here it comes: vegans are giving their offspring vegan names en masse. Whatever happened to good old Jan or Kees?

BabyCenter recently launched its annual Top 100 baby names of 2018. What did it show? Names that can be directly linked to the vegan trend are also the baby trend du jour. Or, well, names? As long as you consider Kale and Kiwi names. “As fast food and processed snacks lose ground to clean eating and Paleo diets, more Gen Z and Millennial parents are choosing names that reflect their love of healthy foods.”
And we’ll call him… Kale!
Kiwi rose a whopping 40 percent in popularity, while Kale gained as much as 35 percent in 2018. Maple (35 percent) and Clementine (15 percent) are also more popular than ever. But I wonder whether we would ever name Dutch children Boerenkool or Mandarijn? Herbs and spices are also doing well in baby-name land: Saffron rose in popularity by 31 percent and Rosemary by 20 percent. Sage for boys rose by 15 percent.
