Chocolate works better against persistent coughing than, for example, codeine, the substance often found in cough syrup or other medication. According to cough expert Alyn Morice from the UK’s Hull University, chocolate is the best remedy for fighting a cold.

Theobromine

Morice conducted research among 163 patients who took cocoa-based cough medication. Visible improvements were seen within two days. This is due to the substance theobromine in cocoa. This substance works better than codeine because it soothes the throat and suppresses coughing.

Syrupy

Researcher Morice indicates that syrupy chocolate is well suited to forming a layer around the nerve endings in the throat. These are the culprits that cause the urge to cough.

The purer, the better

Dark chocolate works best: a percentage of 70 percent or higher, and as pure and unprocessed as possible. It is best to suck on it so that the chocolate slowly melts in your mouth.
