An ode to white bread rolls

With an expensive product or complicated preparation method, you can quickly impress everyone, but sometimes it’s a simple, humble product that you’re actually craving most. Right? That’s why today we’re celebrating the bread roll that no longer gets enough attention these days: the white bread roll.

These days, it’s almost impossible to buy normal bread. Everything is spelt, rye or sourdough, covered in healthy seeds, organic and, of course, made with flour from the local mill. I almost don’t dare put a loaf of white sliced bread in my shopping cart anymore, afraid of the condescending looks from my fellow shoppers. And what about white bread rolls?

Comfort food

White bread rolls are the ultimate comfort food in the bread category. So soft that you can eat them even with a toothache or when you’re too tired to chew, but those are certainly not the only moments when I crave such a fluffy roll. If they appear here during lunch, which doesn’t happen often, I have to restrain myself from immediately eating four rolls. Because yes, a white roll with cheese is the best thing in the world, but so is one with salami, peanut butter and chocolate sprinkles… Or peanut butter and chocolate sprinkles. Hmmmm, is it lunchtime yet?

At the supermarket

Anyone who truly wants the very best gets their rolls from the traditional bakery, but I have to admit that I hardly ever do that. The huge advantage of the supermarket versions? They’re so full of preservatives that they seem to stay good forever. That way, you can eat white rolls all week without leaving the house. Who wouldn’t want that?

Bonus: topping tips

A few more things that work well on a white roll: slices of liver sausage, a croquette (duh), cheese soufflé with mayo, chocolate sprinkles and cream cheese. And let’s definitely not forget the sausage roll, naturally topped with mayo, ketchup, pickle and fried onions. Hmmmm.
