Are your eggs still good?

The date on the carton says your eggs are no longer good, but you’re really craving that omelet and have absolutely no desire to leave the house. There’s a good chance your eggs are still perfectly fine, but of course you want to be sure. Here’s how to check.

You definitely have all the tools you need at home—the only thing you have to do is fill a glass or bowl with water. Drop the egg in and see whether it floats or sinks to the bottom. Eggs always contain a small amount of air, and the older the egg, the more air enters through the shell.
Floating?
If the egg immediately sinks to the bottom, it contains very little air and is therefore incredibly fresh. In the pan it goes! Is the egg standing upright but still touching the bottom? Then the egg is a little older, but still completely safe to eat. Is the egg floating to the top? Then your egg is old. Just wait a very little longer before throwing it away.
Crack the egg open and smell it. Does it smell the way you’re used to? Great, go ahead and eat it. Does it smell rotten? Then unfortunately you’ll have to make a quick trip to the supermarket for a new carton.
