Dorilocos: nachos for advanced snackers

Imagine nachos with gummy bears, cucumber and chili powder. It sounds bizarre, but in Mexico these over-the-top nachos are wildly popular.

Tostilocos
The original name of this snack is ‘tostilocos’, named after another nacho brand: Tostitos. How this Mexican street food made its way around the world remains a mystery. The story goes that tostilocos were invented by Mexicans who wanted to give an Americanized product (nacho chips) a Mexican twist, but it was probably just a marketing stunt by Tostitos.
Gummy bears
For this snack, a bag of Doritos Nacho Cheese is opened on its side. The bag of chips is then filled with various ingredients such as diced cucumber, shaved carrots, cueritos (pork skin), gummy bears, peanuts and chili powder. It is all topped with a hot salsa.
Basically, dorilocos have no rules, and what you add depends on personal preference. The Filipino version of the snack, for example, contains frankfurters. Huh?
It is mainly eaten as an after-school snack and is so popular because of its different textures and flavors, and because there are so many ways to vary it. Healthy is another matter, of course—I always just got an apple or a sandwich as an after-school snack. Still feel called to try it? Get a bag of Doritos, candy, carrots and whatever else you feel like, and make your own dorilocos at home.
