Emma’s food annoyances: always too little butter

I often eat, a lot and with great pleasure, and then I regularly notice certain things. Often they’re positive things, but it also frequently happens that something annoys me immensely. Whether that’s justified or not, sometimes I just need to vent. Hence this column: Emma’s food annoyances, featuring a restaurant annoyance this week: always getting too little butter.

Crispy fresh bread with a thick layer of salted butter. Sometimes happiness really can be that simple. I’m not exaggerating when I say that, whenever I go out for dinner, I look forward for days to that moment when bread and butter appear on the table. That first bite of bread with a sip of wine, and the evening has begun. Still, it’s a little disappointing that by the time I finish my butter, I always have a bit of bread left over.

Be generous

I spread butter on my bread in lavish quantities, you see. During the week I hardly eat any butter, because, well, there are healthier choices. So when I go out for dinner at the weekend, I’m obviously not going to hold back. I’m also almost always a little disappointed when a fellow diner starts spreading butter and then distributes slices of bread to the entire table. Super sweet, but why on earth do you put such an absurdly thin layer of butter on that bread? When it comes to butter, more is simply more.

And to all the penny-pinchers who are going to comment under this post that I can simply ask for more butter: I know that too. I do. But half the time the staff forgets because halfway through they get distracted by a proper order. In the meantime, I tear off a small piece of bread and use it to scrape around the dish to get out every last bit of butter. How pitiful. And there are still always two pieces of bread left that I can’t spread anything on.

When the butter finally, finally appears on the table and it’s rock-hard. What did I do to deserve this injustice?
