Emma’s food frustrations: never enough mayo

Not enough mayonnaise with your fries? It’s a universal problem in the hospitality industry that many snack lovers can relate to. Whether you’re a serious dipper or simply a fan of a generous dollop: that tiny sauce cup really isn’t enough.

It’s 2025. We have facial recognition on our phones, AI that turns our pet into a person (tried it yet? Scary!), and drones that deliver pizza. But a normal-sized portion of mayo with your fries? No way. Dutch hospitality industry, do something about it.
Always too little mayo: how is that possible?
You’re sitting in a busy restaurant and, after a great deal of effort, have finally managed to order some fries. It’s busy in the kitchen, so it takes a while. Not a problem at all, because the beers are already in front of you and you’re having a good time. You look hopefully at every member of the serving staff who comes even remotely in your direction. Will it be your order?
Finally, your portion of fries is placed on the table. “Enjoy,” the waiter says kindly before walking away, even though you actually want to call him back immediately. You saw it at a glance: a mini cup of mayo that you need a magnifying glass to find.
Mini cup of mayo vs. fries for four: how does that work?
There’s something very strange going on in the hospitality industry. You get a generous serving of fries, but the accompanying sauce cup is literally the size of a Monopoly house. I’m an enthusiastic dipper, admittedly. One fry, one thick swipe of mayo. And then another bite. But seriously: are there really people who are satisfied with that stingy ten-milliliter plastic tub? I don’t believe it.
Cold fries
It’s a small effort to ask for extra mayonnaise, which is something I always do. But there’s a problem. Fries get cold. Somehow, the request for extra mayo also seems to be forgotten nine times out of ten. By the time your extra portion arrives, the fries are already cold. Or worse, you’ve already put one or more fries into your mouth dry—the ultimate nightmare for any mayo fan.
Just give us the whole jar of mayonnaise at the table
It’s a small effort. Really. Just put a generous bowl on the table. Or, if that suits the place’s style better, an aesthetic little jar with a spoon—just make sure there’s enough in it. Because yes, this is a first-world problem, but it’s one every fries fan recognizes. A generous spoonful of mayo makes the difference between pure snack bliss and bitter misery. So, dear people in the hospitality industry: don’t be shy with that mayo.
Thanks on behalf of all generous dippers.
