How long can you keep food in the freezer?

Bought too much meat or bread? Put it in the freezer for later use. With the icy temperatures, you might think that your food will now last forever. But even in the freezer, your food has a best-before date.

How long you can keep something in the freezer varies by product. It also makes a difference whether products are raw or whether you have already prepared them. With this guide, you’ll always know how long the contents of your freezer will stay good. Tip: put everything in a freezer bag with the freezing date written on it. This prevents confusion.

Poultry

Raw: 9 months
Cooked: 4 to 6 months

Meat

Steaks (raw): 6 to 12 months
Minced meat/burgers (raw): 3 to 4 months
Meat (raw): 2 to 3 months

Fish and shellfish

Shellfish (raw): 3 to 6 months
Oily fish (salmon, tuna – raw): 2 to 3 months
Lean fish (cod, white fish): 6 months
Fish (raw): 4 to 6 months

Other

Soup: 2 to 3 months
