How many oliebollen do you have to eat to gain 1 kilo?

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day without a crispy oliebol with a huge mountain of powdered sugar or a thick layer of pistachio paste (the trend of 2024 to close out the year with, naturally) is of course not an option. But how many oliebollen do you have to eat to gain a kilo?

I currently feel as though I’ve gained five kilos in a week. Christmas stollen (from Fort Negen!), gourmetten, dessert every day—you know the drill. Tonight, we’ll also be stuffing a few oliebollen down our throats together, so think of it as training for the 31st. Will we immediately see that oliebol consumption on our extra-creamy bodies on January 1? Or is it all not so bad?
7,000 calories
To gain one kilo, you have to eat 7,000 calories too many. If you want to do that over the course of a week, that amounts to 1,000 calories a day. That’s on top of the usual 2,000 calories a woman or 2,500 calories a man needs each day. I think I easily managed that over Christmas, but how many oliebollen does that amount to?
An oliebol with currants contains 178 calories, so you have to eat roughly 39 of them before reaching 7,000. And on top of that, you still have to eat your 2,000 or 2,500 calories as usual, de Volkskrant reported a few years ago. The pastry stalls have been spreading their delicious aromas across squares throughout the country for quite some time now (have you tried the Dubai oliebol yet?), so in principle you’ve had enough time to enjoy an oliebol or two every day for those extra kilos.
Round belly
Is New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day the only time you actually eat oliebollen? Then you can breathe easy. The chances are small that you’ll manage to eat that many oliebollen in one evening. After all, you also have to drink champagne (tip: the one from Lidl costs next to nothing!), and hello, what about apple fritters? And have you actually gained a kilo from oliebollen? Congratulations! Hopefully, you’ll think back to every delicious bite while rubbing your rounder belly.
In 2025, you can go back to being healthy (try making them in the air fryer). Or not. Happy New Year!
