Vegetables and fruit are the foods that go moldy the fastest. Give in to that? No way. We have four handy tips to help prevent it to some extent.

Get rid of that fruit bowl

Do you have a fruit bowl on the table? Get rid of it. Many types of fruit produce a certain substance: ethylene gas. This substance speeds up the ripening process of the types of fruit lying next to it. The same applies to the vegetable drawer in your refrigerator, so try to store your vegetables and fruit spread out around the kitchen.

Make a vegetable vase in the refrigerator

What do you mean, flowers in a vase? Just put some asparagus in a jar of water and you’ll get pretty close. By putting your asparagus in a vase or jar with water and placing it in the refrigerator, the vegetable won’t dry out, which means it will go moldy less quickly. This also works well with fresh herbs.

Freeze everything

By now, everyone knows that you can keep food good for longer by freezing it. This doesn’t just apply to frozen pizzas and ready meals. If you chop an onion, you can simply put the chopped pieces into an empty water bottle and place it in the freezer. When you need them, just shake them out again. You can put leftover herbs in an ice cube tray with water; when you need them again, thaw the ice cubes and you’ll have your herbs back.

Mix apples and potatoes

Yes, we know. We just said it should be the other way around, but with potatoes and apples, keeping them together works really well. This is the only combination that helps extend their shelf life. Store the two in a paper bag and place it somewhere dry and cool.
