I Have a Dessert Stomach

creme brulee

Hi, I’m Emma and I have a dessert stomach. You know that feeling when you’re so full after eating that you feel like you’re about to burst? When you’re puffing and groaning with your trouser button undone, claiming you’ll never eat again? Until dessert arrives… Sound familiar?

Recently, I was at a press lunch with FavorFlav’s Renée, where we had already gone completely overboard with all the savory food. After four dishes to share, we thought dessert was the next course. So we ate everything on the table. Since other people hadn’t finished their langoustines, it seemed only logical to us. But shit, then the main course suddenly arrived.

Five desserts

And not just any main course. The table was filled with braised goat shoulder and veal cheeks, fish, fries, stamppot, Brussels sprouts and more. I had a few bites of everything and then completely collapsed; I had never felt so full, and then dessert was still to come. Five (!) desserts were placed between us. To share, of course… Lots of ice cream, French toast, chocolate (sauce), little cakes, cannoli, you name it. An amount enough to drive you crazy, but guess what? We ate everything down to the last bite.

Always room

So, a dessert stomach. Somehow, there’s always room for dessert. That full feeling I get from eating lots of savory food simply doesn’t happen with desserts. I could easily eat four crème brûlées, even if I’ve just had three courses. Ice cream is a category all its own. After the gourmet feast at the office, we made a dessert with meringue and ice cream with FavorFlav. When everyone had had enough, I simply put that enormous tub of ice cream on the table for myself and a few other dessert stomachs. I never get enough of it.

Inhuman

I’ve never understood that there are people who don’t like dessert. One of my best friends is one of them, and every time I’m in a restaurant with her, I’m amazed all over again. She doesn’t bat an eyelid and doesn’t even want a bite when I’m enjoying my tarte tatin or pecan pie. It does nothing for her. I find it inhuman. No, as far as I’m concerned, you should always order more desserts than there are people, and everything should be eaten down to the last bite.
