Kitchen frustration: that dirty baking tray yet again

Baking tray. The word alone causes frustration, because why is that thing constantly dirty? Washing it only removes the surface dirt, but it never gets truly clean. What does and doesn’t work when cleaning that thing?

I once got the tip to clean my baking tray with ketchup. The acidity of ketchup was supposedly high enough to dissolve all the grime in thirty minutes. It didn’t work at all—a waste of the ketchup and the sponge, which could go straight in the bin afterwards. Help, so what does work?
Vinegar and baking soda
The magic words that will save your baking tray from dirt are vinegar and baking soda. Fill your sink with equal amounts of vinegar and baking soda (about one coffee cup of each) and add warm water. Is your sink not big enough? Simply pour the mixture onto the baking tray until the entire surface is covered. Let the baking tray soak for half an hour to an hour. Then the scrubbing begins: make sure you get the edges too, as that’s where most of it collects.
Dry the tray immediately to prevent rust. A smart move is to always use baking paper from now on when baking something in the oven. Unfortunately, even then, grease and juices still seem to escape around the paper in my case. It’s a never ending cycle.
