Losing weight? Go somewhere tropical!

Putting on weight on vacation? Nothing could be further from the truth! Definitely book a ticket to Miami or the Bahamas, because losing weight is easier in temperatures above 30 °C.

Less hungry
Dietitian Lynn De Merlier tells AD that we need less energy in temperatures above 30°C. Our bodies have to work less hard to keep our body temperature at the right level. This automatically puts a brake on our appetite. The hormone serotonin, which is partly responsible for appetite, is produced in smaller doses at higher temperatures. The result is that we feel less hungry.

In extreme temperatures, you can even become malnourished. Our body temperature then rises, we feel feverish and our appetite comes to a complete standstill. I’ve never personally suffered from that, but hey: if science says so.
Still staying home?
No money for a ticket? We get it, with this soaring inflation. But the cold has its advantages too, says De Merlier: “Our bodies need more energy in winter to stay at the right temperature. Anyone with the willpower to eat less then will quickly start drawing on their fat reserves.”
