This is the secret ingredient for the tastiest tomato soup

Sometimes nothing beats a delicious bowl of tomato soup. Homemade, of course, preferably with meatballs in it too. But what really makes a good tomato soup? There are thousands of recipes to be found online, but whatever you do, make sure you add this ingredient.

The ingredient that makes your tomato soup taste its very best and brings everything into balance: cinnamon.
Cinnamon: not just for tomato soup
It’s no coincidence that pasta sauce also benefits greatly from cinnamon; cinnamon gives it just the right sweet accent while keeping all the flavors in balance. If, for example, you add (too much) sugar to the tomatoes, you completely eliminate their tartness. Cinnamon makes the whole thing a little sweeter while still preserving the tomatoes’ acidity.
Also great: sun-dried tomatoes
For the very best result, it’s also recommended to add sun-dried tomatoes; they have a deeper, more intense flavor than regular tomatoes. And combined with cinnamon, your soup simply can’t go wrong. I usually make the soup in the slow cooker, because that’s when, in my opinion, the flavors come into their own best.
And how much cinnamon should you use? I use about half a teaspoon per liter, but even half that amount makes a big difference. Just experiment to taste.
