Must visit: Lisbon’s oldest pastelaria

Pastel de nata is a popular Portuguese pastry that has been made at Confeitaria de Belém since 1837. Crazy about flaky pastry and custard filling? Then a visit to this pastelaria is a must.

Origin
The recipe for pastel de nata, also known as pastel de Belém, was first created by Catholic monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, a historic neighborhood in Lisbon. This original recipe is a secret to the rest of the world, but Confeitaria de Belém has it in its hands. Pastel de nata is a custard pastry, sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar, and it tastes best when warm.
Confeitaria de Belém
The pastelaria is the oldest and certainly also the most famous in Lisbon. Every day, long lines of tourists and locals form outside the door to get their hands on a pastel. Around 20,000 are sold every day! Each one freshly made.
Of course, you can also get delicious pastel de nata in other places in Portugal; everyone puts their own spin on it. But for the original recipe and the experience that comes with it, you really have to come here.
