New: high tea at McDonald’s

McDonald’s never ceases to surprise us. Our favorite fast-food restaurant has recently started offering a high tea arrangement. And no, this isn’t an ‘only in America’ kind of thing. You can simply have high tea at McDonald’s in the Netherlands.

A high tea is originally a British custom. It is a light meal eaten around six o’clock, before dinner (also called supper or tea). Nowadays, there is nothing light about it, and it mainly means eating lots of little cakes and sandwiches in the afternoon. Incidentally, the word ‘high’ refers to the height of the tables. High tea was served at regular tables, while afternoon tea was served at low coffee tables.

What can you expect when you order a high tea at McDonald’s? A tiered stand with sweet treats from McCafé, such as cheesecake, macarons, chocolate brownies, donuts and cinnamon rolls. Naturally, classics from the kitchen are not missing either, as you also get McNuggets with sweet-and-sour sauce, cheeseburgers and French fries with dipping sauce. You can also enjoy unlimited coffee, tea, cappuccino, latte macchiato and mochaccino. All that for a mere €12.95.
