Former colleagues and friends Marleen Hemmer and Willem Kors came up with the hugely popular pancake topping together: Leentje’s Poeder Pret. The colored sugar is so popular that they can barely keep up with production. It is available in no fewer than 1,500 supermarkets.

The idea came about when Willem’s son jokingly poured the entire contents of a can of powdered sugar over his pancake. They laughed so hard that they thought: ‘We can do something with this.’ Marleen immediately bought colored sugar and pulverized it in the blender into powdered sugar. Her children tested it and went completely wild. And that was how the idea for Leentje’s Poeder Pret was born.

From Store to Restaurant

At first, the sugar was only available at Jumbo, but demand was so high that you can now find the colored sugar in many more places. They have special jars and refill buckets for food-service wholesalers, and it is now also available at other supermarkets such as Albert Heijn.

So you know what to do if a big pancake party is on the calendar soon. Children go completely wild for the colored sugar. It doesn’t make the pancakes taste any better, of course—food coloring is tasteless after all—but it is definitely more fun, festive and colorful. Dig in!
