The most bizarre eating competitions

Eating competitions are immensely popular in the United States. And things go wrong quite often. Not so strange when you consider that the world record for eating hot dogs stands at 72 hot dogs in ten minutes. Here are the most remarkable competitions at a glance.

For many Americans, the championships are a fun day out. Going to watch people eat with the whole family. That participants sometimes die during the competition is simply accepted. Why you enjoy watching people eat is a mystery to me. Why on earth you would want to take part and stuff 25,000 calories down your throat in ten minutes, risking your own life, is an even bigger mystery. But still, it is fascinating.
Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest
Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is the father of all eating competitions. Nathan’s Hot Dog has been around since 1916. The competition is held annually and always takes place on the 4th of July, a national holiday in the States. The event on Coney Island (Brooklyn, NY) is incredibly popular: thousands of people attend, and nearly three million people watch live every year. The record is held by American Joey Chesnut, who ate 74 hot dogs in ten minutes.

Hooters Wing Eating Competition
In Florida, you can take part in a wing competition. Don’t expect to have much of a chance, because eating king Joey Chesnut is competing here too. He holds the record: 184 chicken wings in ten minutes.
Chachos Taco Champion
Every year, a taco-eating championship is held in San Jose, California. In 2014, Matt Stoney ate 101 tacos in eight minutes. Thankfully, the man is still alive.

Even more deliciousness
Besides hot dogs, tacos and hot wings, pizzas, ice creams, apple pies, donuts and Wiener schnitzels are also regularly devoured as quickly as possible during eating competitions. So if you ever wake up thinking, ‘I could really go for sixty Wiener schnitzels today,’ sign yourself up.
Extreme
Here is another video of extreme competitive eating contests, including eating as many jalapeño peppers as possible.
