Tip: drying herbs in the microwave

Those jars of dried herbs from the supermarket are perfectly fine, of course, but also insanely expensive! And how cozy is it to have your kitchen filled with your own dried herbs? How do you dry them? Simply in the microwave.

A little dried oregano over your pizza, some dried mint over your yogurt sauce; fresh really isn’t always better, and having a supply of dried herbs at home makes your life a lot more fun. And let’s be honest, unless you drink liters of mint tea, you’ll never use up that bunch before it starts to get nasty and old. Drying it for later use is then your best option.
Insanely expensive!
Dry them yourself, yes. Because did you know that dried herbs are the most expensive products in the supermarket? Dried parsley costs an impressive 237 euros per kilo, bay leaves cost 312.50 euros per kilo, and you pay almost 400 euros for a kilo of chives! So it is absolutely worth drying your herbs yourself from now on—especially since it is incredibly simple.
The best flavor
You can also dry your herbs at a low temperature in the oven or simply hang them up, but the microwave is the fastest option and also preserves the most flavor and color. Win-win! This method works with all kinds of herbs. Whether you choose hardy herbs such as rosemary and thyme or soft herbs such as parsley, basil, and mint.
How?
Spread the herbs out in a single layer on paper towels, making sure the herbs do not touch each other. Cover with another layer of paper towels and microwave the herbs for one minute on the highest setting. Now check whether the herbs are dry enough and return them to the microwave in 20-second increments until the desired result is achieved. Now all that’s left is to hang them up in the kitchen so it looks as if you live in a French holiday home.
