10 cooking tips from Gordon Ramsay

You love him or you hate him, but there is one thing we can all agree on; Gordon Ramsey can cook like no other. The top chef shares some of his simple but incredibly useful tips that make life in the kitchen easier. Make the most of them.

1. Let’s start at the beginning. According to Gordon (and us), a sharp knife is an absolute must in the kitchen. So sharpen your knives regularly, because that’s the only way to keep them truly sharp. And sharpening them? Here’s how!
2. Next up: the cutting board. It shouldn’t wobble. Because a sharp knife and a wobbly cutting board are bound to end in a trip to the emergency room. To make sure the board stays in place at all times, dampen a sheet of kitchen paper and place it underneath the board.
3. A vegetable peeler isn’t only ideal for peeling fruit and vegetables, but also for cutting ultra-thin slices of things like carrots and cucumber. That would hardly be possible with a knife!
4. You can also use a vegetable peeler to shave Parmesan over a Caesar salad, or run it along the side of a chocolate bar to make curls for your tiramisu.
5. Peeling a whole bulb of garlic? Flatten the bulb by pressing down on it with the palm of your hand. Place it in a bowl and put another bowl of the same size on top. Shake the garlic back and forth for about 10 seconds, and you’ll see that you can pick the fully peeled cloves out from between the skins.
6. A clean chef is a good chef, according to Gordon. So always place an empty bowl next to you in which you can put all the peels, seeds and ends, keeping your worktop clean and tidy.
7. Scrambled eggs or fried eggs: never add salt right at the beginning. This affects the texture of the egg. So always season at the end, once the eggs are cooked.
8. To easily remove the seeds from a chili pepper, roll the pepper between your hands. This loosens the seeds from the ribs. Cut off the top of the pepper and you can simply shake all the seeds out.
9. Chopped chili pepper and now your fingers are burning with heat? Squeeze some fresh lemon juice over your fingertips and the heat will disappear in no time. You can rub your eye again without a care!
10. No garlic press at hand? You can also finely mince garlic with a knife and a pinch of salt. Salt softens the garlic’s fibers, making it easier to chop finely.
