Gordon Ramsay’s ultimate grilled cheese sandwich

What a dream job that man has. Now we’ve come across another video in which Gordon Ramsay visits a local cheesemaker in Tasmania and puts together the ultimate pan-fried grilled cheese sandwich. With cheese you can only find there, but that doesn’t matter, because this works just as well with a Dutch cheese.

First, the great chef cuts two thick slices from the cheese. One is a cheese with pink peppercorns – divine, but good luck finding that if you don’t want to fly halfway around the world. It doesn’t matter, just choose some delicious melting cheese for your grilled cheese sandwich and if you can find something with some fun little peppers in it, even better. The thickness of the slices matters too, and as mentioned, they are not exactly thin. Think: as thick as your mobile phone.
No thin slices of bread
Then the knife goes into a loaf of bread. No thin slices of bread, he advises. Capiche? He saws off thick slices of a delicious rustic crusty loaf. A thick layer of butter goes on the outside of the slices, the way a plasterer treats a bumpy wall: don’t be stingy. Then he sprinkles salt and pepper over them. The cheese is placed on the slices, along with a spoonful of kimchi.
Press it down
Of course Ramsay fries his grilled cheese sandwich in a pan, because pan-fried grilled cheese sandwiches are the best grilled cheese sandwiches. But he puts that pan… over an open fire. Olive oil in the frying pan, thick slices of bread in it. His secret move: press the grilled cheese sandwich down in the pan, making it deliciously crisp and helping the cheese melt properly. Turn it over and do it again: push down as if your life depended on it. When he bites into his own creation, he has just one word for it: wow.
