10x these are the tastiest market stalls in Amsterdam

I love browsing markets. Abroad on holiday, but also ‘just’ in Amsterdam. Maybe I enjoy it even more in our capital, because there I know which stalls you absolutely don’t want to miss (and which ones you do..). Where you can get the tastiest sandwiches, spring rolls, fish, herring or the best ingredients for the BBQ. But above all: just loads and loads of delicious food. And because I’m a fan of the concept sharing is caring (except when I actually have to share my food, because I don’t do that), I’m sharing my favorite market stalls with you.

The ones in Amsterdam, that is, from North to South and everything in between. And hey, if you have a tip that’s not listed here even though it absolutely should be… Let me know! I’m never one to shy away from testing it out myself. It’s always nice to have another excuse to wander aimlessly around the market for a morning.

The tastiest market stalls in Amsterdam

1. For a falafel sandwich and Kurdish lentil soup, head to De Pekmarkt in Amsterdam Noord on Saturdays. I haven’t seen FavorFlav’s Sharon get this lyrical about food in ages as when she ate these two things (‘I’m going again this weekend!’). “Everything so fresh, so comforting, so delicious… The homemade mango sauce, the falafel made right in front of you… that fragrant soup… And all for that price!” Two falafel sandwiches for six euros and a large bowl of soup for 2 euros—where else can you still find that? Right here…

2. Also really don’t skip the gözleme stall at Ten Katemarkt. And then get the eggplant gözleme: hand-rolled Turkish dough—trust me, you want to try this.

3. Sabich sandwich at Lindenmarkt. I think Lindenmarkt is wonderfully cozy and fun anyway. First stop for a coffee at a nearby place, then finish with this sandwich. Heavenly. Deliciously spicy, though do pay attention to what your plans are afterward. Because, um… Yes, the Sabich smell will happily follow you around for the rest of the day.

4. Herring from Van Rheenen & Zoon’s herring stall at the Albert Cuyp. Not only FavorFlav’s Marcus‘s favorite; this is a true institution on the Cuyp. They’ve been there for over 50 years, and I nominate their slogan, ‘here stands the undisputed best herring specialist,’ as the best of all the market-stall slogans.

5. Summer rolls from the Vietnamese stall, also at Ten Katemarkt. They’re absolutely gigantic, and that SAUCE with them—my goodness, how good. This genuinely counts as lunch for me, and it costs you… €3.50! Unless you want a second portion (which is quite likely), of course.

6. Hummus and wraps at De Gouten Tent—yes, once again at Ten Katemarkt. I always get a wrap here when I’m hungry, and I always take some hummus home. Sooooo delicious. Once you’ve had genuinely good market hummus, you’ll never want a supermarket tub again.

7. Chicken at Kip van het Vuur at Ten Katemarkt. Hmm, it’s starting to look like Ten Katemarkt will be the ultimate winner. The chicken here is such a must-try. Great to eat at home, but the takeaway sandwiches are also highly recommended. Disclaimer: Kip van het Vuur can unfortunately no longer be found at Ten Katemarkt, but they are at Amstelveen 4 days a week..

8. Vietnamese spring rolls at the Albert Cuyp. I have no idea what this stall is called, but it’s the only Vietnamese stall on the entire Albert Cuyp, and they have the tastiest Vietnamese spring rolls in all of Amsterdam. €1.20 each, but I can never get enough with just one. Far too delicious.

9. All the vegetarian dishes at Tyros Lebanese Foodkar at Ten Katemarkt. Baba ganoush, hummus… everything here is highly recommended. Buy plenty and make it a top vegetarian evening. DELICIOUS!

10. Kebab at Dappermarkt. The stall is called Beste Döner, and you may find that arrogant, but admittedly: it IS the best döner. The kind of döner you can enjoy even if you haven’t knocked back liters of beer and it isn’t after midnight. No, this one is excellent at any time of day.
