13 things that are perfectly acceptable as a foodie

When I arrive at a party, I’m soon casting a glance (hopefully not too obviously) at the dining table. Are there chafing dishes filled with delicious food, a cold buffet… or at least a cheese board? I confess: a party without food is not for me. As a foodie, there really shouldn’t be any shame in your game. So here goes:

It’s okay…

1. That you follow more food accounts than family members on Instagram.

Your teenage niece’s selfies are cute, and that aunt who likes all your photos is very sweet. But you mainly have your Instagram account so you can drool endlessly over the most delicious dishes and chefs posting instaworthy photos.

2. That before going on a city trip, you’ve already scoured the entire internet for the best restaurants

Before and after visiting a city, you’re a walking Lonely Planet guidebook—and your friends are more than happy to take advantage of that.

3. That you download the menu of the restaurant you’re going to visit weeks in advance.

And then, at the restaurant, still pretend you don’t already know exactly what you’re going to order. We see you

4. That despite your twenty-eight cookbooks (yup, you needed all of them), you still make the same Caesar salad

Old and familiar. We get it.

5. That your family and friends know they’re never allowed to take a bite before you’ve taken a photo #instafood.

It has practically become part of your table etiquette

6. That instead of Orange is the New Black, you’d rather binge-watch Chef’s Table

Because nobody wants to spend all day watching women in orange overalls eat rice porridge. Right?

7. That when you make plans, you actually mean that you want to go out for something to eat or drink.

A day of walking in the woods? Um, do they have food there?

8. That you first want to know what everyone else is ordering before ordering something yourself.

A duplicate order on the table is a definite no-go. That means you can’t snag anything from one of the other plates.

9. That after eating something, you realize the argument you just had with your partner was completely ridiculous. Sorry for what I said when I was hungry

Take one bite and suddenly you see the world through rose-colored glasses again.

10. That you’re the personal snack vending machine in your group of friends. You never leave the house without snacks.

Because you never know when a natural disaster might suddenly strike. Granola bar, anyone

11. That you only go to the cinema for the popcorn.

And then you’ll take the film as a bonus.

12. That you think it’s perfectly normal to have six different jars of za’atar at home.

They really do each add something just slightly different to the dish. I promise.

13. That you actually don’t enjoy a party without food.

Please don’t invite me if there’s no food.
