In the Netherlands, we build up to Christmas via St. Martin’s Day and Sinterklaas; in America, they first celebrate Thanksgiving at the end of November. A holiday like any other, with a turkey from the oven, family gathered together and the necessary cooking blunders behind closed doors. Sound familiar?

Is it really a celebration if someone doesn’t drop a pie, the dog doesn’t steal the turkey from the table, you don’t tease your brother like a child—even as an adult sister—and the folding table doesn’t collapse at an inconvenient moment? Looking at these photos, people should be glad they received anything edible at all during Thanksgiving.
