150,000 unsold pear trees available for FREE collection nationwide
Yesterday we wrote about the 8,000 pear trees that are available for free collection in Heerenveen, but we have good news for everyone who cannot (or does not want to) drive all the way to Friesland: free pear trees are being distributed at more than 20 other locations across the country.
From Breukelen to Breda and from Epe to Ede: pear trees can be collected throughout the country on Friday and Saturday. Free of charge. Why? Because of the coronavirus, the trees — low-stem Conference pear trees — were not sold and are at risk of being burned. The cold-storage facilities are being shut down, so they can no longer remain there.
Reap the benefits
The 150,000 trees now looking for a new home were actually intended for export. But because of the coronavirus, that did not happen. So growers are left with a surplus. Burning them would of course be a terrible waste. A waste of the CO2 released into the air, a waste of the trees, a waste of the fruit and a waste of the insects, cooling and greenery.
So seize your chance, pick up a tree and decorate your garden with such a lovely specimen. You will literally reap the fruits of it.
