8,000 unsold pear trees available for FREE via drive-through in Heerenveen
Were you planning to go to the garden centre soon to upgrade your vegetable garden? Whoa, stop, wait! On Saturday, August 22, 8,000 pear trees will be available for free in Heerenveen.
At Omrin’s Ecopark de Wierde in Heerenveen, the grower has a huge surplus. The trees were not sold because of coronavirus, and he would rather give them a second chance than have to destroy them.
Surplus
We have written about it before: from wine to fries, coronavirus has caused quite a few surpluses. The same applies to pear cultivation. Because summer is now over, the grower is switching off the cold store. As a result, 150,000 unsold trees that were actually intended for export are being released. Coronavirus has made it difficult to get those trees to their destination. Fewer boats are sailing and fewer planes are flying. “As a result, there is a surplus of pear trees,” an Omrin spokesperson told the Leeuwarder Courant.
Drive-through
Want one? The pear trees are so-called whips and are one and a half to two metres tall. Anyone interested can come to Ecopark de Wierde on Saturday, August 22, between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. A drive-through has been organised especially for this event, so people can collect the trees in a ‘corona-proof’ way.
Once home, the trees must be planted immediately with plenty of water to increase their chances of survival. Each interested person may take a maximum of 50 trees, and make sure to get there on time because once they’re gone, they’re gone.
