20x proof that seagulls don’t care that it’s actually your food

Enjoying a bite of delicious herring, but watch out, because a white gang of robbers is trying to steal your snack. Seagulls: super annoying and – when you see them up close – really creepy, with that scary beak. And seriously, how big are those creatures! And determined!

It has been scientifically established: seagulls are less likely to snatch your food if you look them in the eye. A researcher from the British University of Exeter investigated this using a box of fries. When she looked at them, the birds took nothing; as soon as she looked away, another chip was gone. The solution could be: stare straight at those white fluttering thieves.
Attack from behind
Seagulls know when you are looking at them, even if you use binoculars, Kees Camphuijsen of the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) told NOS. And looking at them to prevent them from stealing your ice cream or snatching your kibbeling is not a foolproof method either, according to this gentleman, because the seagulls will simply fly toward you from behind, so you do not see them coming – and are all the more startled.
