24 hours in Groningen

Looking for the ultimate location for a city trip in your own country, or happen to be in the far north? Groningen is the place to be, we can tell you that much. Here’s how to spend the day eating your way through the city.

Breakfast – Pernikkel
The name of this eatery comes from the Flemish word ‘pernikkelen’ – having an irresistible urge for… food and drink in this case. You’re in the right place here all day long, but we preferably come for breakfast with American pancakes or French toast. Be sure not to skip the baked goods either; they’re heavenly.

Lunch – BAQ bread & café
BAQ is a hip, artisanal bakery and bread café in the heart of Groningen. The bakery works closely with local millers and farmers. You can eat the purest, freshly baked breads from the region there. Be sure to finish your lunch with a piece of Groninger turf: authentic pastry from the far north.

Drinks – Brouwerij Martinus
Martinus is located in an incredibly charming warehouse, overlooking the famous Drakemanstoren. The brewery’s aim is to put Groningen on the map as a beer city. Be sure to take a tour of the brewery and spend the afternoon enjoying drinks on the ultimate rooftop terrace. And oh, last but certainly not least: the food is also excellent.

Dinner – Gustatio
La casa della pasta. Groningen has an inseparable connection with Italy. The Giro d’Italia once started there, and every street seems to have a pizzeria, trattoria or osteria. One you definitely shouldn’t skip is Gustatio. You won’t find meat dishes or pizza there, only pasta dishes as the main course. Be sure to try the homemade honey grappa: absolutely finger-licking good.
