Before we give you some handy tips, a disclaimer is necessary. Don’t try this with a precious, valuable bottle of wine, because these tricks aren’t 100 percent foolproof. Proceed at your own risk!

How to open a wine bottle without a corkscrew

1. Use a lighter to heat the neck of the bottle. This will take a few minutes. The heat causes the air to expand, slowly pushing the cork upward until it pops out of the bottle.

2. Use a screwdriver to twist a long screw into the cork until only a few millimeters are sticking out. Just enough to grip the screw between the tines of a fork and pull it out with some force. Note: the fork may bend a little, so leave the heirlooms in the drawer.

3. You may have seen this one before: people putting a wine bottle in a shoe and then banging the sole of the shoe against the wall. Another option—ideal for picnicking in the park: find a sturdy tree trunk, take off your sweater or shirt, and wrap it around the bottle. Remove the capsule from the bottle and repeatedly strike the bottom of the bottle, holding it horizontally, against the tree trunk until the cork is almost out. You can pull out the last bit yourself, with your teeth if necessary…

4. For real wine drinkers with strong muscles, you can also push the cork into the bottle, using the handle of a fork or the shaft of a wooden spoon, for example. This means the cork will end up in your bottle, but if you do it carefully, it should remain intact.
