5x what food packaging would look like if it were more honest; this is what that looks like

In supermarkets, we’re constantly being fooled right in front of our eyes by misleading products. Food watchdog Food Watch thinks that’s not done and has been fighting it for years. Like here: they gave these 5 products honest (and shocking!) food packaging.

Foodwatch keeps a close eye on everything lining supermarket shelves and warns consumers about misleading products – and there are quite a few of them. We’re aware of many misleading supermarket products, but it regularly happens to me that I get seriously fooled by a supermarket product. Every year, Foodwatch also awards the Golden Wind Egg to the most misleading product of that year, with the 2020 winner being: Nutella cups.
Misleading marketing
But with the following five products, the manufacturers also try to make everything sound a little better than it really is. Foodwatcher Marcel Steeman created these honest packages, with a wink.
Conimex Wok Paste five spice & black bean
The first ingredient listed on this packet is glucose syrup. Ouch, that means there’s more sugar in the paste than the herbs intended for it. And the name is misleading too; it sounds Asian, but Conimex is actually a Dutch brand.

Lipton Green Ice Tea Matcha cucumber & mint
Foodwatch calls ingredients that are prominently mentioned on the front of a product but are present only minimally in the product itself ‘bait ingredients’. Take this Lipton Ice Tea with matcha. It contains just 0.07% matcha tea powder. Gotcha!

OKE Hazelnut spread
Cocoa with the UTZ certification seems promising, yet the cocoa industry is a huge mess. On top of that, this chocolate spread is full of palm oil, for which huge numbers of forests are being cleared, especially in Asia. Not okay.

Knorr Farmer’s omelet
‘Farmer’s omelet with onion and leek’ – you’d think that’s what you’re buying, right? The onion is there, but the leek is nowhere to be found. On top of that, for this farmer’s omelet you still have to add an egg yourself to the ‘hydrolyzed vegetable proteins’. Secretly, we hope you never make your farmer’s omelet from a packet, but make it yourself with these tips!

Zonnatura herbal tea
100% natural with 20 herbs: sounds healthy, but it definitely isn’t. First of all, it contains just 1.5% herbal extract and this tea mainly consists of lots of sugar, such as grape and cane sugar; every spoonful for a cup of tea consists of 92% (!) sugar. Are you still with us?
