6 trends that will hopefully disappear soon

Trend forecaster Vincent van Dijk can get extremely worked up about all the food crazes these days, which are served up as ‘trends’ and keep popping up whenever and wherever.

These days, you can’t open a brochure, whether it’s from the garden centre or the local perfumery, without stumbling across the word ‘trend.’ And the culinary world is no exception. But usually, they aren’t trends at all—they’re short-lived crazes. Like these six, which have thankfully already passed, or hopefully will soon.
1. Blue wine
No drink flooded Insta timelines as quickly as Gïk, the blue wine made from Chardonnay and E163, the added blue colouring derived from blue grapes. But if the product isn’t good enough, even the most brilliant marketing can’t keep a craze alive.
2. Gold
A hamburger covered in a layer of gold, 24K chicken wings, sushi with gold leaf, gold-covered doughnuts, gold flakes in cocktails… You can’t walk into a restaurant or bar anymore without the (bar) chef having gone wild with gold leaf. Perfectly Instagrammable, but let’s put that gold back in the safe as soon as possible.

3. The cronut
The craze of 2013 that was immediately adopted by Albert Heijn and, from this month (6 years later!), can also be found on Lidl’s shelves. The sweet (mis)baked creation from Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York is a well-intentioned cross between a doughnut and a croissant, but above all, a greasy ball of flour.
4. Freakshakes
Milkshakes overflowing with sweets, biscuits and other sugary junk. The monstrously sweet construction is mostly used only for an Insta photo, because who’s crazy enough to actually slurp down this calorie bomb? Certainly not the Insta girls themselves. The same goes for unicorn and rainbow food, by the way.

5. Cheese tea
Another bizarre social media craze: cheese tea. Tea with cheddar cream or cream cheese is of course hilariously funny to share, but why on earth would you drink this? Even for us—cheese lovers through and through—this so-called Asian ‘trend’ goes a little too far.

6. Bowls
It all started with poké bowls, then came taco bowls, spring roll bowls and breakfast bowls. As long as you put your food in a bowl, we’ll automatically believe it’s healthy. The only shame is that it’s impossible to eat properly out of one of those bowls. And whether it’s actually healthy…

Trend: the anti-trend
Fortunately, there’s also a trend we’re happy about. The new trend is not to pay any attention to these crazes, but simply to do your own thing. Eating a sandwich from a plate, for example, with a cup of Earl Grey tea alongside it. Enjoy your meal!
