7 of the best urban beaches in the Netherlands
You know the feeling: it’s warm out, and all you’re craving is sand between your toes and a comfortable sun lounger. Unfortunately, you live right in the city. That’s where an urban beach is the perfect solution. These are our favorite urban beaches in the Netherlands.
De Oerkap – Haarlem
The urban beach in Haarlem is a lively place. A jumble of mismatched furniture, colorful lights and great music. During the day, children play in the sand, but in the evening the music gets a little louder and it becomes a place for a party. This is also the place to go for a custom-made pizza and refreshing lemonade.

Strand Oog in Al – Utrecht
At Strand Oog in Al, you have a lovely view of the canal and the bridge. It’s a beautiful sunny spot where you can also enjoy a delicious meal. The rendang fries and tuna melt pita are my personal favorites!
De Kade – Alkmaar
Not only is this a place to enjoy the sun with your feet in the sand, you can also come here for great performances, workshops and a barbecue where you can prepare your own meat (or fish, vegetables and other delicious things). And don’t worry: if you don’t feel like rolling up your sleeves, you can simply order food here too.
Belcrum Beach – Breda
Belcrum Beach in Breda is run entirely by volunteers, and all the equipment—from furniture to wooden spoons—is reused, making it very sustainable. You can drink local beers and grab a bite to eat. In the mood for a little culture too? Photo exhibitions, markets, performances and other activities are regularly organized here as well.
Strand Zuid – Amsterdam
Blijburg aan Zee sadly closed last year, but Amsterdam has several hotspots where you can go. Think Roest or Pllek in Amsterdam Noord. Strand Zuid is also a wonderful place to spend warm days. Here you can enjoy whole sea bass and meat, such as smoky ribs, cooked in a charcoal grill oven.

Zandfoort aan de Eem – Amersfoort
From tapas to pizza and barbecue to stamppot, Zandfoort aan de Eem has something for everyone. It’s a convivial place where you can dance to salsa evenings and sing along at the famous disco nights featuring music from the 1960s and ’70s. But you’ll be doing all of that with your feet in the sand.
Beachclub Sunrise – Best
Near Eindhoven, in Best, you’ll find Beachclub Sunrise. It will make you feel completely homesick for tropical destinations. The Buddhalounge in particular makes you feel as if you’re in Bali or Ibiza. If you feel like getting out of your lounge chair, you can join a yoga session; otherwise, simply lean back on a sun lounger.
