9 food commercials that work like a time machine

aardappel anders

Do you remember Domo vla, can you sing along to the Aardappel Anders song, and have you ever eaten Klop Klop? These nine commercials take you back in time like Doc Brown and McFly’s DeLorean – and that’s when you truly realize: that one grey hair is no longer an exception.

No, you can’t see a thing

There’s a generation that immediately thinks “Bros” when they see a hot tub. Light and airy chocolate – does it even still exist? And that bizarre association comes from Adèle Bloemendaal. Even if you’d completely forgotten the entire video, hearing that booming laugh at the end brings it all back in an instant!

Rang is the only Rang

Do those Rang sweets even still exist? Something with fruit, in a roll, and then people wearing leg warmers – definitely a thing in the eighties. Ideal sweets to take on a school trip, stuff into your mouth one after another, and then throw up again at a petrol station after an hour on the back seat.

In those easy packs

Bet you won’t be able to get this song out of your head all day? And that you’ll go around singing “boe boe blah blah” all day? And blurt out “in those easy packs” in every conversation? Thank us later.

Fresh with foam on top, that tastes mustache-good

Dr Pepper was new in the eighties, there was Tjolk, and there was this mysterious drink. I can’t remember anything about the taste, but apparently that isn’t what made Snor stand out from the competition either. It’s all about the foam.

You can cook us and you can bake us

Anyone with vivid memories of Aardappel Anders can sign up for a support group with other eighties babies to process it all together. Because here’s the thing: even after half an hour in the oven with a thick, greasy, ragout-like sauce, raw potatoes are still nowhere near done, and the sauce is really not tasty either. But it was a creative idea, and that song is brilliant.

Darling, is it cold?

A series of commercials featuring a man in a hat who got car trouble, survived a wild chase, and hacked his way through a densely overgrown jungle: those Bokma commercials were all very exciting.

Spicy little cap

A cute little boy explaining how much he loves that peanut butter: classic. Laurens Bon (because that’s Petje Pitamientje’s real name) became wildly popular overnight. Then a story started circulating that he had died in a car accident. Not true—the newspaper published a correction, but it stirred up so much emotion that little Laurens and his parents had to go into hiding for a while…

I love it nice and fresh

There it is again, the leg warmer, in all its glory. Because if you did aerobics all day, as people did in the days of Jane Fonda, you couldn’t eat an ordinary cheese sandwich for lunch. Heinz had that figured out: nice and fresh, nice and different. Still available!

Klop Klop makes it deliciously light

You’d think that a product like Klop Klop, instant whipped cream, wouldn’t still exist these days. But you’d be wrong. You can still buy it. Curious? It’s a powder that you mix with ice-cold milk, and then you have: whipped cream. After whipping it with a mixer for a good fifteen minutes, of course.
