A tasty list: the best instant noodles out there

instant noodles

Of course, the real deal is often the most delicious, but every now and then I can really enjoy a simple Indomie. You can pimp it with an egg, garlic or basically whatever you like, but on a hungover Sunday it’s also perfectly good without any of the fuss, if you ask me. Well, some noodle soups, that is. Because there’s quite a difference between the brands and flavors. That’s why I’ve put together the ultimate list for your next hungover day: the best Indomie out there.

You can find some of them on supermarket shelves, while others you may have to order online—but then you’ve got something to look forward to.

1. Indomie Mi goreng

Yes, of course I can immediately put this old favorite at number one. Simple, cheap, but oh so flavorful. And I always really recommend adding an egg to this one.

2. Nongshim Shin Ramyun

I saw this one recommended online so often that I decided to investigate. And guess what: they’re simply on the shelves at Albert Heijn. WHUT. You should definitely try these, because even though they’re a little more expensive (but at just over one euro, they’re still not exactly going to break the bank), they’re currently my favorite.

3. Nissin Soba Teriyaki

With this brand, I often find it a bit hit-or-miss, but as far as I’m concerned, the Teriyaki flavor is definitely good enough. Although I think it tastes best if you pimp it up with some extra vegetables, an egg and some herbs. Then it’s truly excellent.

4. Samyang Carbo Hot Chicken

Unfortunately, you can’t get this one at the supermarket. At least, not at larger chains like Albert Heijn and Jumbo. But you may come across it at an Asian supermarket, or order it online from Tjin’s Toko. I always feel that instant ramen at Asian supermarkets is just a little better, and this variety completely confirms that impression. The curry flavor is also delicious, especially if you add a little extra coconut milk.

5. Nissin UFO Yakisoba

You can also find this one at Asian supermarkets or online, but you won’t find it at Appie. And unlike the others on this list, this really does make a mega meal. It’s a substantial bowl, but seriously, genuinely delicious. Of course, it doesn’t contain much that’s healthy and it’s probably mostly salt, but every now and then I don’t care. These are simply great.

6. Ottogi Jin Ramyun

These come in spicy and non-spicy versions, but I like the former best. Okay, it is hot, but not the kind of hot where my-mouth-is-on-fire. So even if you don’t handle spicy food very well: just try these. You can order them online (or once again, if you’re lucky, find them at an Asian supermarket) and they cost one euro. That’s nothing. You’d be missing out if you left them on the shelf.

More tips?

If you think this list is incomplete, please let me know. There’s a very good chance that I’ll be hungover on the couch again this Sunday (with weather like this, you don’t have much of an excuse to go outside anyway) and craving a bowl full of comfort food like this.
