Albert Heijn stops offering free plastic bags in the fruit and vegetable section
Buying fruit or vegetables at Albert Heijn? Then you no longer need to look for a free plastic bag, because they can no longer be found in the fruit and vegetable section of Albert Heijn stores.
Everyone knows the plastic bags in the fruit and vegetable section. Handy for loose apples or green beans, but bad for the environment if you do not recycle them properly. That is why Albert Heijn is saying goodbye to these so-called ‘vest bags’. This saves 130 million bags—or 243,000 kilos of plastic—per year!
They have been replaced by sustainable produce bags. These are washable and can be used dozens of times.
Most sustainable supermarket chain
Albert Heijn also recently launched AH Packaging-Free, a concept that allows you to do a large part of your daily shopping more sustainably. Such initiatives have not gone unnoticed—the supermarket was voted the most sustainable supermarket chain in the Netherlands for the sixth year in a row this year. That is the outcome of the Sustainable Brand Index™ 2022, the largest and most prominent study in Europe on consumer brands and sustainability.
