Albert Heijn stops offering plastic bags in the fruit and vegetable section
Good news, as far as I’m concerned: Albert Heijn wants to get rid of all plastic bags. Because there are quite a lot of them. Not only for carrying groceries, but certainly also the little bags for fruit and vegetables. That will soon be a thing of the past. By the end of 2021, the free plastic bags, or fruit and vegetable bags, will have disappeared from all stores.
Since the end of April, twenty Albert Heijn stores have no longer had plastic bags in the fruit and vegetable section. They have been replaced by sustainable reusable produce bags. These are washable and can be used dozens of times. In the coming months, this change will be introduced at more and more Albert Heijn supermarkets.
Plastic soup
As I said: good news! Because goodness me, what a mess we’re making with all that plastic. Since our seas are full of plastic, it inevitably ends up in fish, shellfish and crustaceans too. Plastic soup, in other words. Not good for the fish, but not for the people who then eat those fish either. It’s shocking how much plastic you ingest when you eat fish!
Back to Albert Heijn
Because it’s going to tackle that plastic soup. Not only with the fruit and vegetable bags, but also with the new line of bags featuring ten different, more sustainable shopping bags made from 100% recycled plastic (PET). In short, a good alternative to Albert Heijn’s regular plastic bags.
Vacuum-packed cheeses
Now let’s hope that the plastic packaging around the vacuum-packed cheeses at Appie will also make way for a better alternative. Aside from the fact that this would save a lot of plastic, it would also mean far fewer cuts in our household.
