Aluminum foil: dull or shiny side on top?

vrouw aluminiumfolie

Just like us, you probably take the roll of aluminum foil out of the drawer, tear off a piece and neatly cover your leftovers without thinking about which side of the foil should be on top. Huh, what? Yes, there are actually two different sides: a dull (matte) side and a shiny (glossy) side. Does it matter which side you use to cover your food?

Opinions differ quite a bit on the answer to this question. Some people claim that it really does matter which side of the foil you put on top. Others think it is nonsense and say that the foil does the same job regardless of which side you use, so it makes no difference whatsoever whether you cover your food with the underside or the top side. Time to find out!

Shiny side up

The group of people who believe that it really does matter claims that dishes you want to keep warm should be wrapped with the shiny side facing inward and the matte side facing outward. According to them, the shiny side reflects the heat and the dull side retains it.

Production process

But is that actually true? Opponents of the above claim that the shiny and matte sides simply work the same way. The difference lies in the production process of aluminum foil. When the foil is flattened by the machine, the side that touches the roller comes out shiny and the other side dull.

Myth

According to a spokesperson for aluminum foil manufacturer Toppits, it does not matter which side you use; they work exactly the same. The idea that the dull side retains heat better is supposedly a myth. So you can continue taking that roll out of the drawer without giving it a second thought.
