Amarula: the most exciting airplane drink

Amarula-sky

Commotion in celeb-land! Katja Schuurman, wife of one of our favorite chefs, Freek, is said to have behaved sexually inappropriately high up in the air after having just a little too much Amarula. We completely distance ourselves from all these rumors, but we did immediately wonder: what kind of drink is that? And is it really that exciting?

Amarula

Amarula, not exactly a household name here (until a few days ago, that is), is a hugely popular liqueur in South Africa. Compare it to Bailey’s: deliciously creamy, but slightly fruitier. The fruity flavor comes from the marula fruit, which grows on the wild marula tree. The marula fruit ripens from January to March and contains four times more vitamin C than an orange. It is a popular snack for elephants, which is why the drinks brand has its iconic elephant logo. The marula fruit is shrouded in mystery. Local folklore, myths and legends attribute mysterious powers to it. Could it really be…?

I’ll have what she’s having

Also in the mood for a turbulent flight? With Amarula, you can go in any direction. By adding sugar to the cream and marula fruit, Amarula becomes a deliciously fruity caramel liqueur. Delicious in a cocktail, neat or over ice. Great as a digestif: swap your Bailey’s for this South African drink. Need cocktail inspiration? Go for an Amarula Martini or Amarula Spice! Afraid of flying? Then make an Amarula boat. Bon voyage!
