Animal Rights: Grana Padano cheese is animal suffering and must be removed from supermarket shelves immediately!
‘Remove the Grana Padano products from the shelves immediately!’, an urgent appeal from animal rights organisation Animal Rights. The organisation released shocking footage showing how dairy farmers mistreat the animals.
The footage, recorded by the Italian activist group Essere Animali, shows a calf dangling by its hind legs from a fence, another calf being torn away from its mother immediately after birth and put in a cage, and a calf being thrown roughly into a wheelbarrow. The dairy cows are also suffering greatly. For example, one cow is shown being connected to the milking machine immediately after giving birth, while the placenta is still partially hanging from her body.
Horror cheese
As a result of the shocking footage, Grana Padano cheese made with milk from this dairy farm immediately becomes Italian horror cheese. Jumbo, Albert Heijn and Belgian supermarket Delhaize, to whom Animal Rights’ appeal is addressed, have responded to the incident. Delhaize says it is investigating the treatment of the calves, while Albert Heijn states that it has never carried Grana Padano cheese from this dairy farm in its range. ‘Zanetti, the supplier of AH Grana Padano cheese, knows its dairy farmers and assures us that this dairy farm is not part of its chain,’ said an Albert Heijn spokesperson. Jumbo says it will still investigate.
A plant-based solution?
Animal Rights states that the products are sold worldwide, including in the Netherlands and Belgium. Exactly where is not known. It cannot be ruled out that conditions at other dairy farms are not always equally animal-friendly either. In 2017, Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) published footage of farms supplying milk for Grana Padano, which also showed serious animal abuse. Animal Rights says there is only one way to be certain that dairy is produced ethically: switching to plant-based alternatives.
