McDonald’s immediately stops purchasing beef after shocking footage

The living conditions of millions of animals in the livestock industry have been a major topic of discussion for years. And rightly so. Because even today, far too many animals are subjected to unnecessary suffering. This week, undercover footage emerged from a slaughterhouse in Epe, and to put it mildly, it is rather shocking.

Countless pigs, sheep, cows, chickens and other animals are killed in the most horrific ways around the world. And even when the animals are not killed, they often lead anything but pleasant lives. Coconut milk or coconut yoghurt animal-friendly? The opposite turns out to be true, just as in this slaughterhouse…

Stopped immediately

RTL Nieuws released the disturbing footage last Monday, showing cattle and pigs being beaten severely and given electric shocks. The footage came from Gosschalk slaughterhouse. Meat from the slaughterhouse is sold, among others, on the shelves of supermarket chain Boni, while McDonald’s also uses it for approximately twenty percent of its burgers sold. After seeing the footage, both Boni and McDonald’s immediately stopped purchasing the meat.

Stricter supervision

The farmers who supply the pigs to Gosschalk are also, to put it mildly, shocked. At one of these companies, Stichting Het Wroedvarken, animal welfare is a top priority. They too announced that they would have their pigs slaughtered elsewhere with immediate effect, until the slaughterhouse has issued a statement. The ‘Beter Leven’ quality mark, for which De Dierenbescherming is responsible, calls the situation deeply tragic and demands that extra cameras be installed from now on for stricter supervision, so that abuses like these can be prevented sooner.
