Are you embarrassed by your lover at the dinner table?

Do the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when your boyfriend secretly picks his nose during dinner? Or does your girlfriend make loud smacking noises? You’re not the only one who gets annoyed: research shows that one in six Dutch people is embarrassed by their partner’s table manners.

It can be quite a thing to bring your new love to meet your family for the first time. At home, you can still try to influence your flame’s outfit, but once you’re at the table, it’s every person for themselves. What a nightmare if they suddenly start burping and, after dinner, put their hand down their trousers while your cheeks turn red.

Women are the most embarrassed

The website Acties.nl conducted research into table manners in the Netherlands. Notably, at 21 percent, women are twice as likely to be embarrassed by their partner as men are. Only ten percent of men are embarrassed by their significant other. As a woman, I may be biased, but I can certainly imagine it. I’ve sat across from many a man who stuffs his food down like a caveman and doesn’t even know how to hold his cutlery. Total turn-off!

Biggest blunder

What is the biggest blunder your partner has also committed during a family visit? Or when they met your group of friends for the first time?
