Asia on the Amstel

It’s his second attempt, but this time he’s going to make it work: Han Ji of The Hague’s starred restaurant HanTing Cuisine is opening the Dutch flagship store of his completely revamped chain Oriental Bar & Kitchen Umami by Han on Amsterdam’s Overtoom.

Last summer, an Umami by Han already opened in the Chinese capital Beijing. And in November, Amsterdam will follow—the city where the old concept previously failed to take off. Unlike in Maastricht, Rotterdam, Eindhoven and The Hague.

Haute Asian Cuisine
But Han Ji is convinced that the revamped ‘Haute Asian Cuisine’ formula will succeed. The Michelin-starred chef is also returning to a city where Asian hospitality is now experiencing a true boom. Especially in the category of affordable, accessible yet high-quality establishments, of which Shanghai Bistro and Umaimon Chicken Ramen Noodles are examples. Amsterdam is slowly turning into Asia on the Amstel.

Thanks in part to Han Ji, Amsterdam is becoming Asia on the Amstel

The Amsterdam Umami flagship will have an all-day concept with various options, including a business 40 Minute Lunch and more extensive menus featuring meat, fish or vegetables.

Asian Afternoon Tea
But what we’re especially excited about is the Asian Afternoon Tea, consisting of six small dishes per person with matching coffee or tea varieties.

In the evening, guests can enjoy drinks at Umami accompanied by Asian-inspired cocktails and finger food. Naturally, everything has the healthy twist Han Ji is known for, in keeping with his motto ‘food=medicine’. And, moreover, with the same high quality as at HanTing Cuisine.

If only it were already early November.
