At this well-known supermarket, you can now only buy organic dairy
What kind of milk do you go for? The ‘regular’ variety or organic? If you can buy a more sustainable option for a few cents more, the choice is easy for me. But at supermarket Plus, customers no longer have this choice. From now on, the supermarket will only sell organic dairy. And the good news: you won’t pay more for it!
By selling only sustainable milk and yoghurt, Plus wants to help its customers do their grocery shopping more sustainably. I think that’s a good step, especially when you don’t have to pay an extra cent for it.
More sustainable but not more expensive
Because when people think of organic products, they often think they have to pay more for them. But that isn’t the case here. The price of a carton of organic milk will remain exactly the same as that of its non-organic predecessor. Around one thousand organic cows, which live healthier lives in more space and receive more sustainable feed, will produce around 7.8 million litres of milk for the supermarket every year. The farmers, who take good care of the soil, contribute to biodiversity and work without pesticides, will receive the full price for the milk they supply. Only fair, says the supermarket (and we agree).
Taking decisive action
Starting next week, you’ll already find organic skimmed, semi-skimmed and whole milk on the shelves, as well as organic buttermilk. At the end of July, all yoghurt will follow, and in September the larger cartons will also switch to sustainable versions. Plus’s initiative is being called exceptional. No other competitor sells only organic dairy. A decisive move, then, which will hopefully inspire many other supermarkets to follow suit.
