Automatic distancing on the terrace thanks to these ridiculous hats

How do you keep one and a half metres away from others on a cosy terrace? To eliminate every risk, this German café came up with a solution: hats for all guests, with protrusions indicating the minimum distance. Germans do have a sense of humour after all?

Those flexible tubes that children use in swimming pools don’t really have a good Dutch name, but in English they’re called pool noodles. The owner of Café Rothe Schwerin stuck those things crosswise onto a number of hats. When her terrace was allowed to reopen, she handed out the hats; that way, everyone could see exactly what one and a half metres’ distance really means.

Pool float on your head

A huge success—everyone dutifully stayed away from one another. Of course, you look absolutely ridiculous with those pool things on your head, but at least it’s safe. Or is it? In the comments on Facebook: ‘The virus also remains on plastic. If you put someone else’s hat on, you could still unintentionally contract Covid-19.’

Propeller isn’t ideal

OK, so it’s still unclear whether these propellers are really the answer to everything. The owner of the coffee house said it was a publicity stunt to draw attention to changes in the hospitality industry. Visitors no longer have to wear them—but of course, they may.
