Bitterballen, beer and sushi: how the Netherlands experienced the match against Japan

Last Sunday was our first match at the 2026 World Cup. In a packed Dallas Cowboys stadium, Oranje looked set for three points for a long time, but in the final minutes the match still ended in a 2–2 draw. But that didn’t completely dampen the celebrations. Because, judging by Uber Eats’ figures, we know that watching football and enjoying good food go hand in hand.

Burgers, pizzas and… sushi?
Orders came flooding in. Okay, burgers and pizzas were the big winners of the evening, but in third place was a surprising favorite: sushi. With a subtle nod to our beloved Japanese opponents. Or was the Netherlands simply in the mood for maki? We’ll leave that open to interpretation.
During the match, delivery drivers kept coming and going. Burgers, pizza, sushi, pollo and kebab were the most popular choices. Apparently, an exciting game tastes just a little better with a well-stocked table. And rightly so. Food brings people together.
Kickoff was rush hour for delivery drivers too
Orders poured in between 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. Alongside the familiar cheeseburger and pepperoni pizza, the 1+1 Free Football Combo also performed remarkably well. Apparently, for many Dutch people, a football evening simply goes hand in hand with a good deal. The busiest moment? Kickoff itself. Orders also surged during halftime, as if the whole country was thinking at once: just one more snack round.

Sushi watch party worth more than three hundred euros
While most people stuck to a pizza or burger, one group really went all out. The most expensive order of the evening came to €303.78 and consisted of a complete sushi spread filled with gyoza and more than fifteen different types of sushi. That must have been quite a cozy watch party.
According to Uber Eats, the evening mainly showed that football brings people together, regardless of the result. And honestly: with bitterballen, beer, burgers and sushi on the table, that may well have been the evening’s finest victory.
